Grandma Iris

I miss you, Grandma Iris
I can not believe it has been fifteen years
Since you have been gone
I remember it was the first time I saw dad cry tears
When he came to tell me you had died
They both held me as I cried
You died right before I was supposed to get married
I ended up getting married in July
I so wish you could have been there in person
And not in spirit
I wore your ring…my something borrowed
I know you saw me from your new home in the sky
As you can see…all your grandchildren
We are all grown up now
And most have babies of their own
You even have great-grand grandbabies too
Grandma, there are times when I really wish
I could talk to you
You were so sick back then
With your heart and your kidneys too
We were all there in the hospital
We held your hand and we talked to you
I remember good times at the family cabin
You washing my hair at the sink
Of those special times
I often do think
I remember going with you to get the mail
We drove slow so we could talk
I told you secrets and you promised never to tell
You told me sometimes it’s good to talk, us girls
It was always good talking to you Grandma
I wish we could sit and talk
Over a game of Up Words and a glass of ice tea
In your strawberry kitchen
Just you and me
