I was in third grade when she died
I was so sad my mom held me as I cried
The last time I saw her was the day Elvis died

I called her Grand Mom
She would have fanned my fanny
If I ever called her Granny

It was her and Pa Pa Bill
I would get so excited when they would come to visit
From down in Florida up to Indiana
I would get so see them so rarely

She was sick
But I didn’t know it
She had breast cancer

Then one Saturday morning
The telephone rang
Grandma and I were in the kitchen
She answered it
She started to cry
It was Pa Pa Bill
Grand Mom had died

I ran up the stairs to get Grandpa
He was still sleeping
Grandma had told me not too
But I did anyway

Our family came
From near and from far
By plane and by car

I never knew anyone who had died before
I was just eight years old at the time
But I remember it like it was yesterday

My first trip to a funeral home
Meeks Mortuary in Muncie Indiana
I was scared
What would she look like
What was it like to be dead
All of these thoughts running through my head

My mom took my hand
And took me up to see her
She looked like she was lying there sleeping

She had her hair all done
She had make up on
She looked peaceful

She was buried in her favorite pink negligee
She looked so glamorous
Like a movie star

I was so sad
But happy she was no longer sick

A few weeks later
I was coming home from school
I got there before my baby sitter
So I was sitting there on our front steps
And I herd something behind me and I turned around
I saw my Grand Mom looking at me out the front door
And she smiled at me
